Getting started using virtual machine

Virtual machine (VM) is a software that use to virtualize the computer workstation. So, you can use VM like you use computer generally, computer inside a computer for short..... :D Once installed, VM software will create virtual hardware in order to operate your new "computer".

Because all of it is virtual, to install OS there you need to copy your OS DVD into image disc (*.ISO) then this image is loaded to virtual DVD-ROM, then boot it via BIOS.

The popular VM softwares is VMware and VirtualBox. VMware is paid software while VirtualBox is free (open source). I recommend to use VirtualBox because you can get it free and it easier to use :D. However, if you want more features of virtual machine than you can try VMware.
VM software take a big system resource when running because it run OS inside OS, so make sure you had enough memory (min. 1GB) to run it smoothly.
In the next post I'll share how to install windows XP to the VM... :D

In VM, there's 2 terms that you need to know, the Host OS and Guest OS. Host OS point to the OS where VM is running (Your current OS) and Guest OS is the OS you run inside VM. You can install Mac OS X, or any other OS as a guest OS while you're running on windows 7 as your host OS..... :D

Look at the example below. The host OS is windows vista, the guest OS is windows XP.

So, you already know about virtual machine right?

Then, what's the reason using virtual machine? There many I'm sure, you can make an experiment how to do a dual boot OS, testing suspicious program, networking, etc. All things you done in guest OS won't affect the host OS.
If your guest OS corrupt and can't boot, then you can simply restore backup or do a fresh install... :D

Don't worry that you broke your real hardware because everthing is virtualized... :D
